The whole story
Posted by Gordon Woolley
I promised I would post the whole story about the night Rebecca was born…..
I will post our journey to the hospital later on, but it is a wild story which includes 90-95 mph aggressive driving, the police, a fire truck, an ambulance and a 4 push delivery.
So here it is…..
I went to bed with Kyle about 8:30 – 9:00 P.M. EST and was sleeping very nicely when I was awaken by Dawn a little after 11pm. She tells me that she thinks she is in Labor. I jumped up and started the questions….
How long have the contractions been? How long apart? The contractions were 5 minutes apart but she only had 2 or 3 so far.
I was worried at this point because we have about a 45 minute drive to the hospital, without traffic. By this time I have already been dressed and posted that she was in Labor on the Site already.
We got everything together, woke up Kyle, got him dressed and piled in the car. I asked her if she wanted to go to the closest hospital or did she want to try and make it to the one where her doctor is. She chose to go to the one that is farther way which means………
TIME FOR SOME AGGRESSIVE DRIVING !!!!!!!!
And I drove it like I stole it…..
Every turn that we went around seemed to make the contractions worse. Kyle didn’t really understand what was going on so he was getting upset that his mommy was in pain.
I ran about every light that I came to and passed everyone that was in front of me. I was passing people at about 80 – 90 mph with the hazards on. I was doing 85 in a 45 when I flew past a Cop. I was almost on I-4 and in the home stretch but he pulled up on the side of me and told me to slow down…. What??? I just passed him going almost double the speed limit and he just tells me to slow down. I leaned out the window and said my wife is in Labor and she is having this Baby like now….. By this time she is about 3 – 4 minutes between contractions.
The Cop tells us to pull over and he will get an ambulance. So we pull over and now we wait… The Cop strolls up to the car and I assume he did not believe me, but he soon will find out. She is having a contraction when he gets up to the car and has another about 1 – 2 minutes later. Now he starts to get it….. He changes from lets “just sit back and wait” to “Ummm can you hurry up the ambulance”. They finally get there; it seemed to be forever but only took about 5 minutes. They strapped her up to the stretcher and load her into the ambulance. Dawns Mother took the ride with them, I am sure she was happy to get out of my car, she can’t handle Southern Driving….
Kyle and I followed the ambulance and I had to explain why she is in there and that she is ok. We pulled up behind the ambulance in the Emergency Entrance and Kyle saw Dawn come out with an Oxygen mask on and damn near hit the ceiling. I calmed him down and parked the car in the Parking Garage. On the way in Kyle was so excited about the Baby coming. We got up to Labor and Delivery and as we walk up to the Desk I hear someone screaming. I said “It sounds like she is not having fun”. The nurse at the desk smiled and I asked her what room Dawn is in. She points to the room where all the screams are coming from. I quickly turn and say “Where is your waiting room”.
So Kyle and I went and sat down in the waiting room.
About 5 – 10 minutes later Dawn’s Mother comes out and tells us we can now go in.
We went in and she looked like nothing had happened.
